Sleek and playful

THE FURNITURE designed by Oakland’s Jason Lees combines sleek modern lines, the authentic warmth of wood, and pops of color. The result is playful meets no-nonsense.
“You see a lot of all-wood and all-lacquered or painted furniture, but a mixture of the two is much rarer,” says Lees of the media consoles, side tables, beds, and bookcases he designs. “It’s nice to be able to play with color and wood tones.”
Lees showcases his work at a Lilliputian showroom in a residential neighborhood in Oakland’s Glenview district. He prefers to sell directly to clients instead of through retail stores. Even so, the furniture attracts customers nationwide and was recently featured in the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine and Metropolitan Home.
Lees’s showroom can display only a dozen or so pieces of furniture. On the wall there appears to be a collection of 25 or so modern pieces of dollhouse furniture arranged on shelves. In fact, these are miniatures of Lees’s larger pieces, including platform beds, that have been made to give clients an idea of the breadth of his work.
