Call it Field of Dreams: East Bay edition. After Vallejo native C. C. Sabathia enjoyed his first World Series championship, he helped give a Little League diamond an extreme makeover.

The tall lefty helped the New York Yankees win a championship in the first year of his $161 million contract. Then, he helped rebuild the weed-infested field where he used to fling fastballs as a kid. North Vallejo Little League’s new park is now state of the art, down to the same sod that the Oakland A’s use.

“Thinking back to what was here in terms of weeds and old dugouts to what we have now, I’m as excited as the kids on the first day of the season,” says Sabathia.

The Yankees play in Oakland April 20–22, oaklandathletics.com.
