Prima, a top Diablo restaurant pick, starts a catering business

Prima owner and executive chef Peter Chastain got his start in the often-grueling world of high-end catering, so returning to his roots wasn’t the first item on his to-do list.

“It was the furthest thing from my mind,” Chastain admits. “In fact, after years of working with banqueting and catering, I was really set to just stay in my own kitchen.”

But the recession, combined with a steady stream of inquiries about doing private events, motivated him to start up Prima Catering. Headed by longtime Left Bank Pleasant Hill general manager Lance Bellamy, the venture by the perennial Diablo Food Award winner aims to fill a niche—upscale Italian-themed catering for weddings, parties, and events.

So far, the fledgling operation has hit the ground running, landing some high-profile events such as Save Mount Diablo’s Four Days Diablo fundraiser and DuMol winery’s spring release party.

Chastain says the ultimate focus remains on his restaurant and the wine store, Prima Vini. “Honestly, I think Prima Catering is more of an effort to get people to know about Prima and Prima Vini than it is a profit center,” he says. “We’re trying to bring a little of the experience that we can provide in the restaurant and store out into the community.”
