Benicia sculptor Mary Oros elevates the humble planter to fine art. She packs a custom concrete blend—including recycled material—into molds and adds a pigmented topcoat, in a process that takes about a month. The finished 11–135 pound pieces feature whimsical bumps or chiseled tree bark–like textures destined to become statement pieces in any garden. maryoros.com.

Abeni Ramsey first started growing produce and raising chickens and goats in her West Oakland backyard a decade ago as a way to provide better-quality food for her two young kids. Last year, she started City Girl Farmstore, which offers rare and heirloom seeds, locally made garden tools, organic chicken feed, cheese-making kits, and other basics geared toward aspiring urban farmers. Recently relocated, the store reopens this month on Broadway. facebook.com/510farmstore.
