Boy of Summer

Published:

There was finally joy in Mudville when a Clayton-raised ballplayer was drafted by a Major League team. Nicholas Moresi, the 21-year-old son of Ed’s Mudville Grill owner Ed Moresi, was selected 99th overall and signed by the Houston Astros.

“The Astros flew him down to Houston to sign his contract and take batting practice with the team,” says Ed. “The first player Nicholas met was [future Hall of Fame pitcher] Roger Clemens. He was pretty excited about that.”

Nicholas, who was a star player at De La Salle High School and Fresno State University, will begin his professional career in a summer league in upstate New York. Unfortunately, friends and family will have to wait awhile before they can see the younger Moresi play on one of the Mudville Grill’s big-screen TVs. “Those farm league games are so small, they don’t even broadcast them in the stadium’s locker rooms,” Ed says with a laugh.
