Frozen Nirvana: Ici
Get in line for the new Berkeley cult classic ice cream
When Mary Canales first opened Ici Ice Cream in the fall of 2006, the chefs took breaks from making Mexican chocolate ice cream and peppermint marshmallows to serve customers and tend the register. By the following spring, she had to hire an army of scoopers to keep up with the lines stretching down College Avenue. Berkeleyites continue to go nuts for Ici’s eclectic flavors, top-shelf organic ingredients, and personal touches, such as the bite of chocolate in the bottom of each house-made cone.
• Average number of cones served in a day: 650
• Most people waiting in line: 100
• Most popular summer flavors: Peach-habañero sorbet and boysenberry ice cream.
• New this summer: Popsicles made with fresh summer fruits.
