An expert's Top-5 list of local summer brews
Sometimes going green is as simple as buying local (and saving on carbon-burning transportation). We checked in with the folks at Beer Revolution, a new beer bar in Jack London Square, to get five recommendations for their favorite locally brewed beers to top off your barbecue. Here is Beer Revolution-owner Fraggle's Top-5, in his own words...
Linden Street Urban Peoples Common Lager, Oakland
A refreshing, slightly hoppy lager steam brewed using organic malts by Oakland's first production brewery in more than 50 years. Linden Street is deeply involved in the community, hosting benefits and events and donating spent grains to local urban gardens for compost.
Odonata Saison, Sacramento
The latest release from this new Sacramento-based brewery is a perfect summer beer. odonatabeer.com
Ale Industries Orange Kush, Concord
Concord’s Ale Industries, which just celebrated its one-year anniversary, offers a refreshing Orange Kush (to be called Shush when it’s in bottles due to arcane labeling laws), a Wit beer brewed with coriander, chamomile, and orange peel. aleindustries.com
Drakes Zatec Pilsner, San Leandro
Only available in the summer, the San Leandro-brewed Pilsner has a smooth, light flavor great for the hot weather. drinkdrakes.com
Bonus: Eel River Triple Exultation, Fortuna
A fine version of an Old Ale from an all-organic brewery. Let’s face it, hefeweizens and pales are refreshing summer choices, but sometimes we just need a 9.7-percent kick in the pants. eelriverbrewing.com
