This August, the mother of the slow food movement, Alice Waters, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of her Berkeley restaurant in typical food-conscious fashion. The folks at Chez Panisse are planning a series of events to raise money for Edible Schoolyard National, dedicated to fighting childhood obesity by promoting healthy food education in schools. In a ceremony at Berkeley Art
Museum, the Smithsonian Institution
will induct Waters into the National Portrait Gallery. The evening event will include an avant-garde art installation, plus hors d’oeuvres and cocktails prepared by Chez Panisse chefs. Friday, Aug. 26, $100, bampfa.berkeley.edu.

This fall, UC Berkeley debuts a new two-unit upper division Edible Education 101 course cotaught by Michael Pollan. Guest lecturers will include food journalist Raj Patel, nutritionist Marion Nestle, and Waters herself.
