Cheap Eats: Poke Don
enjoy a fresh made-to-order poke bowl

Why go? Fresh raw fish bowls tossed to order with a dizzying array of condiments (take a glance at the online menu) is a new take on fast food.
What’s the vibe like? An assembly-line ordering counter stocked with colorful prepped fish and produce lends character to an otherwise basic dining space. (Even teens will love the healthy concept.)
What to order? For the base, lettuce works better than rice, and crab trumps tuna. For your protein choices, ebi (shrimp) and tako (octopus) add character, while the hamachi is well worth the 50 cent upgrade. Mango and cucumbers are good add-ins, and be bold with the seasonings. (Get the furikake.)
Added bonus: Order a seaweed salad or miso soup, and save room for mochi ice cream.
How much? $8.50–$12.50.
Where is it? 2491 San Ramon Valley Blvd., San Ramon, (925) 718-5244, pokedon.net. Lunch and dinner daily.
