Ancient Trees: An Exploration of Tea, Palate, Art, & Culture
with Darius Moghaddam
September 14th, October 12th, and November 16th from 2pm - 3:45pm
This workshop will be a deep dive into the ancient history, culture, practice, and art of tea. As we drink through a carefully curated selection of White, Green, Oolong, Black and Pu-erh Teas, we'll explore the various aromas, flavors and effects on the body. I’ll speak about the different growing and harvesting techniques used by artisans to bring out such complex rich tastes and smells. The history of how tea began and its different formations as it has been passed down from generation to generation will also be discussed. Just as one tea has an infinite variety of ways in which it can be steeped, so too are the topics and subjects which can be delved into, but this class is specifically about what you want to know. At anytime throughout the lecture I encourage participation and question asking on any aspect of tea and all its many ways of being enjoyed.
Experience: Darius Moghddam starting washing dishes for Teance at teahouse at age 19. Founder and tea master Winnie Yu saw his natural interest and connection to the tea and took him under his wing. After a few years of tea preparation training and deep study with master Yu, he was brought on a buying trip to China. There he deepened his understanding of this ancient art and tradition. Over the next few years he would continue this process with several trips to Japan, Taiwan, India, and Korea. After 15 years of running the teahouse himself on 4th street in Berkeley California, he has branched out offering lectures, private tea classes, and pouring tea for parties and events.
