Jul 8, 2019
11:00 AM until 02:00 PM

Exhibit open by appointment: July 8 - September 30, 2019; Open Hours: Second Fridays, July-September 2019, 11 am-2 pm; Opening Reception: Tuesday, July 16, 5:30-7:30 pm

Join California Humanities in our Oakland office on July 16 for the opening reception of We Are More: Stories by Queer Comic Artists, which highlights the connections between queer identity and other lived experiences, through the artwork and storytelling of four queer-identified Oakland-based comic artists Ajuan Mance, Breena Nunez, Lawrence Lindell, and Trinidad Escobar.

The exhibit also features clips from forthcoming film, NO STRAIGHT LINES: THE STORY OF QUEER COMICS which tells the story of how LGBTQ comics evolved from a marginalized underground scene to that of mainstream acknowledgement that we know today. The film highlights five queer artists-Alison Bechdel, Jennifer Camper, Rupert Kinnard, Howard Cruse, and Mary Wings-and their work which, once obscure, now has reached worldwide recognition. The film, supported by a California Documentary Project grant from California Humanities, is helmed by filmmaker Vivian Kleiman, with an assist from Justin Hall, the author behind the anthology No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics, published by Fantagraphics Books in 2012.

The exhibit is open to the public every second Friday, 11 am to 2 pm, July through August, 2019. An opening reception, featuring several of the artists, is on Tuesday, July 16, 5:30 to 7:30 pm. To make an appointment to see the exhibit outside of these hours, contact John Nguyen-Yap, at 415-391-1474 x301, or jnguyenyap@calhum.org. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

California Humanities is conveniently located three blocks from the 12th Street/City Center BART station, on the corner of 9th Street and Clay Street. Multiple AC Transit lines and metered street parking is located within the surrounding blocks. An elevator is available to the second floor, and wheelchair-accessible all-gender restrooms are available inside Suite 210. For other access needs, please contact info@calhum.org well in advance of your visit.
