Cheap Eats: Denica’s Real Food Kitchen
Enjoy breakfast and lunch at this family-run diner!
Denica’s fills a niche: It’s an efficient, family-run diner serving lunch and all-day breakfast. This is the second Denica’s (the original is in Dublin), and a Livermore location opened just as we went to press.
Where? 2280 Oak Grove Rd. (in the Nob Hill shopping center), Walnut Creek, (925) 945-6200, denicascafe.com.
When? 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
Why? There’s no pretense. (Order at the counter.) The menu is extensive. Portions are generous. There’s a welcoming air of hospitality. And the cookies are really big.
What? We loved the just-crisp, thick smoked bacon. We liked the mildly spiced chorizo and eggs. The Belgian waffle smothered in berries was delicious but could have been crisper. And the chicken salad sandwich was a bit more spread than salad.
How Much? Breakfast $6.99–$12.99, lunch $8.99–$12.99.
Who Runs It? Denica and James Freitas, who have a passion and commitment rare in a partnership, be it romantic or business. Their growth has been organic; it all started with pastries.
