Having trouble finding a babysitter on New Year’s Eve? Want to celebrate with your kids, without staying up past their bedtime? Take them to a balloon drop!
There are three balloon drops for kids in the East Bay, all celebrating countdowns in other time zones. Each event is annual, so if you already have plans, make sure to come next year. And be prepared for a lot of popping!
1pm: Chabot Space & Science Center’s balloon drop is so popular, they host two separate events, with two locations per event. Some balloons are even filled with special prizes. The locations are split by age group: 6 and under, and 7-12. Unfortunately 6 and under is currently sold out for both times.
To register, call the Chabot Box Office at (510) 336-7373. $3/child, plus admission ($9 to $13). Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd., Oakland. For more information, click here.
2pm: Lawrence Hall of Science hosts a balloon drop with a special apple juice toast. Children celebrate and learn about cultures from around the world with traditional games and festivities. Free with admission ($5 to $10). Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Centennial Drive, Berkeley, (510) 642-5132. For more information, click here.
4pm: Chabot Space & Science Center Balloon Drop (see above, also at 1pm)
9pm: McCovey’s Restaurant hosts an evening celebration and balloon drop, complete with party hats and noisemakers. Countdown to the ball dropping in Time Square on 25 TVs, all while you enjoy your burger and beer. Reservations are strongly encouraged. To make reservations, call (925) 944-9444, or click here.
