Local gardener hosts national TV show
Acalenes High hosts HGTV's Superscapes—Sunday's show to feature Ruth Bancroft Garden.
East Bay born and raised gardener Gary Gragg has hit the big time as the host of HGTV’s latest garden show. Superscapes follows Gragg as he works with homeowners to build the garden of their dreams. This Sunday, the former Acalanes High student returns to his home turf—in researching the installation of a garden that will feature native Californian, water-conserving plants, Gragg tours Walnut Creek’s own Ruth Bancroft Garden for inspiration. The episode airs Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on HGTV. Check out the promo below.
A self-proclaimed “plant nerd,” Gragg has been a landscape contractor and designer for over 20 years and owns Gold Gate Palms & Exotics Nursery in Point Richmond, home to the most diverse collection of plant material in northern California. Raised in Lafayette and Clayton, Gragg is bringing his local expertise to Superscapes by highlighting not only the Ruth Bancroft Gardens in upcoming shows, but also UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens and Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco.
The busy Gragg will also appear in an episode of HGTV’s Showdown, a design competition in which the network’s stars team up to design a Hollywood set. Gragg’s episode airs March 1 at 10 p.m. Watch the promo below (Gragg is the one in the orange t-shirt).
