Monday, March 10: Author Fritjof Capra in Lafayette

Acclaimed author, physicist to discuss his new book, The Science of Leonardo

One thing I love about the East Bay community is the enthusiasm for literary events. (The annual Bookies event at the Lafayette Park Hotel is on Thursday, March 13, and I'll blog about that later in the week.) One of the real treasures of the area is Dave Simpson, of the Lafayette Bookstore, who is constantly bringing authors to readers at events in his bookstore and newarby venues. Dave left me a voicemail about, 1.) his excitement that No Country for Old Men, one of the truly perfect book-to-film adaptations of all time, wone the Oscar for Best Picture, and 2.) local author Frijtof Capra would be appearing at an event this Monday, March 10. The info below is from the Lafayette Bookstore website.

We're thrilled to welcome to Lafayette one of the most compelling scientific and philosophical minds of our generation. Thanks to Larry Duson and our friends at the Lafayette Bank of the West for providing our venue, and to Susan Ritter and her staff at Rossmoor TV for televising the event.

In his new book, THE SCIENCE OF LEONARDO, Fritjof Capra presents a radically new interpretation of Leonardo Da Vinci's science, as evaluated from the perspective of 21st-century scientific thought.

Leonardo Da Vinci has been the subject of hundreds of scholarly and popular books, yet surprisingly few explore Leonardo's scientific studies. Although virtually none of his scientific works were published during his lifetime, Leonardo left behind more than 6,000 pages of voluminous notebooks with detailed descriptions and analyses of his experiments and drawings in such areas as optics and anatomy, water vortices and military defenses, flying machines and the nature of light.

Of those few authors who have discussed Leonardo's science, they have primarily done so through the outdated and mechanistic worldviews of Newton and Galileo, preventing them from understanding its essential nature - a holistic science of organic forms undergoing constant change and transformation.

Including fifty beautiful sepia-toned illustrations,THE SCIENCE OF LEONARDO provides the first coherent account of his achievements in the context of our contemporary scientific landscape, and brings an entirely new understanding of one of the most revered thinkers and artists of all time.
