“I love you so much. Rest in peace. Miss you already,” writes a friend on the Facebook page of Rylan Fuchs, the 17-year-old Danville boy who was shot to death in front of his home Tuesday night. News reports state that officers were called to the home at the intersection of El Capitan and Borica drives at about 9:15p.m. and found the boy lying in front of the home with a gunshot wound to his neck. No motive has yet been named for the shooting. Fuchs, a senior at San Ramon Valley High in Danville, was transported to John Muir Medical Center in critical condition, where he subsequently died this morning. A press conference about the shooting is underway this morning at the Danville police department, 510 La Gonda Way. According to Fuchs’...

Newly inaugurated President Barack Obama has called on the American people to become more involved in public service. In the East Bay, Elaine Taylor stands as an example of public service to her community. The founder of the Taylor Family Foundation was just awarded the Jefferson Award for Public Service, a national recognition system honoring those who serve their community. Founded in 1991, the Taylor Family Foundation provides a place for children with chronic illness and mental disabilities to have a fun experience and find lasting friendships. The Exploratorium in San Francisco is one of those places where anyone from two to 102-years-old can have fun—they always manage to present science in a unique and fun way that's accessible to anyone with an inquisitive mind. One of the more eclectic events they hold is the International Rubik's Cube Competition, which is taking place this Sunday. Well, it turns out that Campolindo and UC Berkeley-grad Dan Dzoan is an expert Rubik's Cuber who has held world records in the one-handed and—believe it or not—blindfolded Rubik's divisions. We got ahold of Dzoan before the competition to discuss the Art of the Cube. Also, make sure to check out

Bill Ayers, the former Vietnam-era radical and Chicago university education professor who became a lightning rod during Barack Obama’s recent presidential race, will be speaking at St. Mary’s College on January 28. Ayers is co-founder of the Weather Underground, which was connected to bombings and riots in the 1960s and 1970s. More recently, Ayers was repeatedly mentioned during the presidential race, when Republicans accused Obama of associating with this “domestic terrorist.” Although they lived in the same Chicago neighborhood, Ayers denies that he had close ties to the soon-to-be president. Ayers is now a professor at the University of Illinois in...

I always love the first weekend in January, because that's when Tony LaRussa throws the best party of the new year at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. ARF's annual Stars to the Rescue concert is always a blast, with a variety of performing artists jamming for a great cause. This year's lineup is really fun. I'm particularly excited to see Billy Bob Thornton's band, The Boxmasters, bring their rockabilly sounds to Walnut Creek. Also, I've always had a soft spot for the AM radio sounds of Air Supply, but have never seen them live. They're also on the bill. So is Tony "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" Orlando, Moving Arts Dance, and political comedian Will...

A Walnut Creek school gymnasium shows up in the part of the film that covers Milk’s 1978 campaign against Proposition 6. At the time, this proposition was as hotly debated as this year’s Proposition 8, the same-sex marriage ban. Back in 1978, Proposition 6, if approved by voters, would have made it mandatory for school districts to fire gay teachers and any public school employee who supported gay rights. Before I get to Walnut Creek’s moment in Milk’s spotlight, here is some background on Milk and Proposition 6: In 1977, Milk made history by being elected San Francisco supervisor, representing the city’s Castro district. The next year, John Briggs, a conservative state senator from Fullerton and a failed gubernatorial...

A year ago, Sara Jane Moore won parole from the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin where she was serving a life sentence for attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford in September 1975. In a new book, Taking Aim at the President: The Remarkable Story of the Woman Who Shot at Gerald Ford, Bay Area investigative journalist Geri Spieler explains how a radical ‘70s terrorist emerged from a middle-aged woman, who, by outward appearances was a typical Danville housewife and mom, well-dressed, married to a doctor, and living in the new upscale Sycamore development. Actually, Diablo in September 2005, 30 years after the assassination attempt, published an article by Spieler, “Don’t Blame it On Danville,” that chronicled...
