Heroic Pilot Has East Bay Ties
Pilot who safely crash-landed passenger plane into Hudson River reportedly an East Bay resident.
Like most 9–5 desk-jockies, editors here at Diablo have been transfixed by the story of the U.S. Airways plane that crash-landed into New York's icy Hudson River. Well, it turns out, according to the Associated Press, Huffington Post, and CNN, that the pilot, named Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger, is a Danville resident. Sullenberger is being hailed as a hero for his—by all accounts—miraculous job of guiding the crippled plane gently enough into the Hudson that all 155 passengers on board were pulled to safety. New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg—himself an accomplished pilot—reportedly spoke to Sullenberger at length and hailed him for doing a "masterful job." According to initial reports, the plane ran into a flock of birds upon takeoff, knocking out both of the plane's engines and forcing the crash landing.
