Bedford Gallery: Local Voice 2008

Opening gala on Sunday evening for Bedford's new show highlighting local artists

Have you ever suspected that your neighbor has a hidden talent? If that talent is for artwork, one of your neighbor’s pieces just might be on display this summer at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek. Local Voice 2008: Defining Community Through Art opens this Sunday and features 186 works from Contra Costa County artists, including newcomers to the local art scene and a few who are already nationally established. Juror Phillip Linhares, chief curator at the Oakland Museum of California, handpicked the best of 661 entries to win Local Voice Cash Awards and gift cards from local businesses. Take advantage of the opportunity to redecorate with the works on display up for sale at affordable prices. You may have until the end of August to make it out to the gallery, but don’t wait too long—the next Local Voice exhibition won’t go up until 2011.

Local Voice 2008 runs from June 29-August 31. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for youth 13-17, and free for children 12 and under. Admission is free every Tuesday and always free for Friends of the Bedford Gallery and Diablo Regional Arts Association members.

The gallery is located at 1601 Civic Drive in Walnut Creek on the first floor of the Lesher Center for the Arts. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 12:00-5:00 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

It is too bad the Bedford feels a meaningful dialog can be established by doing this every 3 years. A biennial would show a commitment to actually furthering the cause of local artists.
