Behind the scenes of Diablo Ballet's killer new season opener, November 21-22

11/18/08

Behind the scenes of Diablo Ballet's killer new season opener, November 21-22

In my nine years as on the editorial staff at Diablo magazine, one of my favorite arts groups to cover has been Diablo Ballet. Artistic director Lauren Jonas works tirelessly to bring a first rate ballet troupe to the East Bay area, and Diablo Ballet has put on myriad wonderful performances over its 15 years. The organization is a true gem in our community.

That said, Diablo Ballet has to stay creative to keep going—and this season's schedule of performances might be its most creative ever. There are a variety of wonderful arts organizations in the East Bay, and they all deserve the attention of supporters and an audience for their performances. Meanwhile, as the economy suffers, support of these local organizations...

Emergency Fund Raiser for Livermore's Open Heart Kitchen

There's a big fundraiser on Thursday, November 20 for Open Heart Kitchen in Livermore. The slumping economy has hit everyone hard. But Open Heart Kitchen, which provides food for the poor, seniors, and school students in Livermore, Pleasanton, and Dublin, has struggled more than most. The only supplier of free hot meals to the needy in the Tri-Valley has seen demand for its services increase while their donations have sharply declined. Diablo talked with Open Heart’s executive director, Linda McKeever, about the organization’s struggles and how people can help.

Local filmmaker's "Call and Response" gets buzz worldwide, shows in Berkeley this Thursday

Oakland musician turned documentarian, Justin Dillon, has always used his guitar like an AK-47. Now he's using it like a video camera for the rockumentary—Call + Response. A tour in Russia with his band, Tremolo, turned into a life altering journey to eradicate the modern-day slave trade.
According to Call +  Response, there are more slaves today than ever before. Having never produced or directed a film, Dillon began cold calling  celebrities and organizations. The response was encouraging, to say the least. Celebrities and musicians jumped at the opportunity to spread the word. From Julia...

30% off coupon for Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Gap stores, good through November 16, benefits CARE

Yesterday I headed into Old Navy in San Francisco, thinking I would come out with a shirt or two as Holiday gifts for my brother. What I wound up with was a pile of polo shirts, hoodies and an expensive sweater. I crept up to the cash register with my 100% cottons and striped prints, not wanting to know the full extent of the damage, but the total tallied up to only forty-one dollars.

This miracle of spending was due to a special promotion going on at Old Navy, GAP and Banana Republic stores from November 13-16 called the “Get and Give Sale”. Shoppers can save 30% off all purchases with a special coupon, easily printed from their computers. Not only is 30% a nice hunk of change to be taken off, but with every purchase, 5% of the total amount will be donated to...

Bee and Me: A fun new book for kids by two East Bay authors

Would you like a recommendation for a good kids’ book? Bee & Me got two thumbs up at our house.
The colorful book teaches kids how important bees are, but the articulate bee in the story never lectures. Instead she wins over a bee-phobic boy in the story and does a little dance in one of the book’s “moving” Ani-Motion illustration panels, which are like holograms. “She’s shaking her booty,” said my daughter, flipping a page back and forth to demonstrate for one of her friends.
Bee & Me, by East Bay authors Leslie Jonath and Lisa McGuiness (Elle J. McGuiness is their shared pseudonym), should appeal to kids aged 0 to about 8. Bee & Me is available at local bookstores as well as online at ...
