Doubt at Center Rep

Let’s first acknowledge the topical premise of Doubt: A Parable, which is being presented by Center Repertory Company at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts through November 22. It involves a priest who is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student at a parish school. But Doubt, which won both the Pulitzer and Tony Awards, goes far beyond addressing the headline-grabbing sex abuse scandals that have plagued the Catholic Church in recent years. It speaks to profound human truths about how to live with uncertainty.

Many of us would agree that this theme speaks to our times. The global economy is in turmoil, and our country has mounting debt while waging an unpopular war in Iraq. We’ve also just lived...

Q&A about DOUBT, with CenterRep's Artistic Director Michael Butler

In an interview with Diablo, Michael Butler, artistic director of Center Repertory Company, discusses the profound human truths raised by Doubt: A Parable, which the company is presenting at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts through November 22. For more information about tickets and show times, click here.

Diablo: What do you think the play is trying to say?

Michael Butler: There’s the context of sex abuse scandals that are so prevalent now that have their origins back in 1964, when the play is set. But that’s not really what the play is about. I don’t know if you could get that from reading the play, but it really is the context—just like the...

Walnut Creek kids help homeless with fundraiser, Sunday, November 2

Walnut Creek kids help homeless with fundraiser, Sunday, November 2

In the fall of 2003, Eva and Simon Krueger, then 6 and 4, noticed what many of us see when we’re in downtown Walnut Creek, shopping in Broadway Plaza or stopping in at Starbucks for coffee. They saw a homeless person.

Riding in their car on their way to Simon’s preschool, they noticed a man standing by the side of the road, holding a sign they couldn’t read. They wanted to give him a ride, or food or money. They worried he might die.

Their concern for this one man inspired the start of Creek Kids Care. For this Walnut Creek-based nonprofit, kids and teens apply their artistic skills to creating stationery, touchstone magnets, knitted items, and framed art to sell. The money they earn benefits Fresh Start, a respite and service center in...

Alviso Adobe Community Park in Pleasanton

After years of planning, Pleasanton’s new Alviso Adobe Community Park opens to the public with a daylong family-friendly event this Saturday.

From the settlement of the Ohlone Indians, to the cattle-herding Spanish ranchos, to the turn-of-the-century Meadowlark Dairy, this seven-acre patch of land has a lot of history to tell. The park will do just that through special exhibits and interpretive programs developed by the city, the Amador Livermore Valley Historical Society, and the Museum on Main, and hands-on activities such as making adobe rocks, churning butter, and weaving baskets.

Peek into the past with a tour the 150-year-old adobe, a state historic landmark and one of only a few adobes still standing today, or recreations of the dairy-era milking...

Of course, this headline is a joke. Actually, Beane, Gingrich, and Kerry are the co-authors of an op-ed in today's New York Times about how Beane's Moneyball business methods might be the way to fix our heath care system. This is the second surprising Beane-related story this week. The other involved Brad Pitt playing the A's general manager in a...

Easy 925 opens in Danville, Diablo is there

Easy 925 is the latest addition to Danville’s nightlife. The lounge held an opening celebration Thursday, October 16th and we were there to give you the scoop. While a little difficult to find due to its location—the same spot where Six80 Lounge and Blend used to reside—the Easy has potential as a hidden treasure. The building is somewhat unapproachable as it is set in the shadows behind Marcello’s Italiana Cocina, but friendly staff members greet clientele at the door.

Once inside, the club gives off a very intimate setting. With trendy décor of chocolate walls backlit with fiber optic’s illuminating satirical quotes, fireplace, and flat screen TV’s displaying sport channels, the club is uptown, yet casual. The full bar offered...
