Another Look: 150 Years of Danville exhibit opens Saturday

Danville Art Gallery Celebrates 150 Years of Historic Buildings

22 local artists are gathering together to show their artwork celebrating the many historic buildings of Danville’s 150 years of history at the Alamo Danville Artists’ Society (ADAS) Pioneer Art Gallery and Studios in downtown Danville. The exhibit, “Another Look: 150 Years of Danville,” will commence this Saturday, October 4 with a reception from 5-8pm.

Danville’s history is rooted in the land, rising from a small group of miners and farmers who raised cattle and sheep, grew wheat, barley, pears, plums and walnuts, and established churches, schools, farmers’ unions and fraternal lodges. Throughout its 150-years, Danville’s rich heritage has been beautifully preserved, especially through the historic buildings of the town.

Ranjani Mohana, Pioneer Art Gallery PR coordinator, enumerates several of the early Danville buildings still standing today, such as “the houses belonging to the Boone, Osborn, Young, Spilker, Podva, Vecki, Root, Elliott and Hartz families.” Mohana continues, “The Danville Hotel and original 1874 Grange Hall exist as well. Many of the early pioneer names appear on the streets and schools, including Baldwin, Harlan, Wood, Love, Hemme, Boone, Bettencourt and Meese.” If learning the story behind these familiar names piques your curiosity, then come to the exhibit and learn more about Danville’s roots.

A familiar Danville icon will also be showcased at the exhibit: the beloved oak tree of the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, Danville street signs and that famous spot for posting birthday wishes once again shines on center stage. Mohana reports that the ADAS has chosen this “symbol of the community” as the featured image of the show’s promotional efforts. Noted artist Leroy Parker’s rendering of the tree will appear on T-shirts and other material.

Whether you’re a town history buff or are hankering to learn more about Danville’s beginnings, come support local artists as they share a piece of Danville heritage with the community.
