Everything will be coming up roses in Contra Costa Musical Theatre’s provoking, heartfelt adaption of Gypsy, directed and choreographed by Jennifer Perry. Loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease legend Gypsy Rose Lee, this musical follows the journey of two starlet sisters and their mother who pushed them into the vaudeville circuit at an early age.
Gypsy’s original Broadway production, which starred Ethel Merman, premiered in 1959, and is regarded as one of the great American musicals. Gypsy gives a glimpse into the grit, glitz, and glamour of showbiz. Popular numbers such as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Small World,” and “Let Me Entertain You” help tell the tale of the burlesque dancer’s upbringing and career.
Gypsy runs from April 1 to May 1, and follows CCMT’s fall production of The Full Monty, rounding out the company’s ‘sneak peek’ into the art of the striptease.
