Cheap Eats: Buffet Bliss at Khana Peena
At $7.99 all-you-can-eat, this local favorite's lunch special is hard to resist.
We all love a good lunch deal, and Indian restaurant, Khana Peena, has got it. The East Bay chain offers a flavorful lunch special in the form of a $7.99 all-you-can-eat Indian buffet (it includes unlimited naan and a soda, yes!), seven days a week. It’s the perfect late-luncher’s spot—serving from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—and happens at all three locations. In the Solano Ave. restaurant, the small buffet is tucked in the corner, keeping the tables clear of lunch-line loiterers. Staples like tandoori chicken and chicken tiki masala rest alongside some great vegetarian options like the delicately spiced chana saag (the healthier-less-creamy-tasting sibling to saag paneer). You’ll want to grab a second (or third) plate and try the tender cubes of lamb dressed in a smooth, aromatic curry sauce. The freshly fried “vegetable pakora” is a favorite over here at Diablo. Also, the large canvas sign in the window promises that they’re open on holidays. I stopped in on MLK Jr. Day, so I’ll vouch for it.Khana Peena, 1889 Solano Ave., Berkeley, (510) 528-2519; 5316 College Avenue, Oakland,
