It's the New Year, and for Bay Area foodies this means tasting some new flavors but still leaving room for some time-honored traditions. Diablo has you covered with the latest scoop on the food front in the East Bay!

New to the neighborhood, Modern China Café will be celebrating their grand opening this Friday. Eric Zhang, former co-owner of Zheng Long, will be hosting Modern China’s premier party, themed “Like Our Hearts, Our Cuisine Is Meant To Be Shared”, at the their new location on 1525 Main Street. The event will be open to the public from 5pm – 8pm. Guests are invited to bring an unwrapped toy or canned or packaged food donation for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano and enjoy complimentary wine and cocktails and samples of their new modern Chinese cuisine.

Courtesty of Walnut Creek Yacht ClubIf you still have some room left in your stomach after the holidays, the Walnut Creek Yacht Club’s traditional January lobster feast is sure to titillate any epicurean’s palate. Per tradition, the WCYC will be offering fresh Maine lobster throughout the month for the price of the New Year, $20.10. The only stipulation is you must make reservations 24 hours in advance, since WCYC only flies in the amount of lobsters needed each day. And if you bypass the drawn butter, this meal should be just as friendly to your waistline as it is to your wallet!

If lowering your carbon footprint was part of your New Year’s resolutions, then check out Gather in Berkeley. This ubergreen restaurant serves up local farm picked, fairly traded foods, and boasts (at the time of print) one of only two all organic bars in the country offering all organic beers and cocktails, as well as an all-California wine list.

Boot and Shoe Service may sound like a place to get your kicks fixed if you’ve got a hitch in your giddy-up, but behind the name is a fun new Pizziaolo spin-off restaurant in Oakland. The menu boasts a number of Italian favorites, including fun twists on pizzas.
