First Bite: Super-ior Fast Food

Super Duper Burgers hits Berkeley.

Aubrie Pick

In keeping with Berkeley’s down-to-earth character, this fast-growing, dozen-strong, Bay Area chain (just three months ago, the first East Bay Super Duper Burgers debuted in Concord) has “slow-food values” and a look that’s neat and confident yet stylishly scruffy.

As of yesterday, the two-story industrial building with a loft, fire-engine-red columns, and a full-windowed facade is the newest kid on the bustling, restaurant-heavy blocks of Telegraph and Durant Avenues.

First of all, you gotta get an organic milkshake; fresh strawberry is best. Then, a burger, of course—the double-patty with cheese and bacon on a petite bun packs a meaty punch. Skin-on fries are good, but skip the garlic-cheddar option.

Lots of healthful options abound, too, such as free-range chicken sandwiches, salads, and a veggie patty topped with hummus and cucumbers. Plus, Super Duper does a superior fast breakfast (starting soon in Berkeley), offering house-made donuts and sandwiches—and all the house-made bread and butter pickles you can eat.

2355 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley, (510) 990-6483, superduperburgers.com. Lunch and dinner daily (breakfast coming soon). Also 2001–2003 Diamond Blvd., Concord, (925) 483-2912. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.
