Vegan Dishcrawl this Thursday

Animal-free food takes center stage at first ever event in downtown Berkeley.

It can be easy for vegans to sometimes feel like the teetotaler at the foodie party due to their strict dietary restrictions.

Local vegan food blogger, Colleen Boucher, is trying to change all that by organizing the Bay Area’s first ever vegan "Dishcrawl," happening on Thursday March 24 in downtown Berkeley. In partnership with Dishcrawl, which organizes themed restaurant food crawls in various neighborhoods across the country, Boucher says the event aims to expose both vegans and non-vegans to the delights of animal-free cuisine on display in Berkeley.

“It’s really about building a community,” she says. “Taking the food community, the vegan community, and the Berkeley community and bringing them all together. Ideally I’d love to take [the event] all over the Bay Area but we thought Berkeley was the best area to kick it off in—it is such a vegan friendly area.”

For $26, participants can eat their way through at least four vegan dishes at four restaurants handpicked by Boucher for their support of the vegan community. Along with getting various vegan tastes, Dishcrawlers will also have the opportunity to meet restaurant chefs and owners who will discus veganism and what it means to them. The names of participating restaurants are being kept under wraps for now to add some mystery to the event but Boucher guarantees taste bud satisfaction (Gather restaurant, which has drawn uniformly critical praise for its vegan-friendly menu including a delicious vegan charcuterie plate, is a good bet to be participating).

“Part of what I’m hoping to accomplish with the Dishcrawl is to show non-vegans that this food can be really delicious,” says Boucher. “I would love for non-vegans to come on the Dishcrawl and get a taste of what being vegan really means.”

** And if you're not into vegan food, Dishcrawl will be hosting another event next Tuesday in downtown Pleasanton on March 29th in which participants will eat their way though four different restaurants for $26 apiece. Visit dishcrawl.com/discoverpl for tickets.
