Diablo Dish Exclusive: Blackhawk Plaza to Open Three New Restaurants

Danville shopping center is teaming with Las Vegas star chef Matthew Silverman for trio of new concept eateries.

Here's some big news for all you East Bay foodies: Danville's Blackhawk Plaza is teaming with Las Vegas star chef and Wolfgang Puck alum Matthew Silverman to open three new restaurants at the Plaza.

The first, scheduled to open this July is Stomp, a wine bar that will offer small plates along with gourmet meats and cheeses. Slated to open later this summer is Coa, an authentic Mexican eatery that will feature more than 100 premium brands of 100 percent blue agave tequila. Finally for the fall, the Blackhawk/Silverman team plans to open a more formal, as-yet-unnamed spot that will feature cuisine from southern Europe and the Mediterranean.

The 31-year-old Silverman has already had quite a career, having served as Wolfgang Puck's youngest ever executive chef and cooked for the likes of The Rolling Stones and Barbara Streisand.

Blackhawk CEO Fred Bruning hopes the restaurants, along with the shopping center's new boutique retail shops such as Geoffrey Scott and Dabble Cosmetics, will create a totally unique shopping experience that will draw residents from the surrounding area—and perhaps even further.

"We're looking at this as something to really ignite the soul of Blackhawk Plaza—we want this to be a special place."

Keep checking diablomag.com for updates throughout the summer, and make sure to pick up our July issue to read an exclusive interview with chef Matthew Silverman—a former music prodigy and a pretty interesting guy.

Look very closely at what is happening to the current Blackhawk Plaza tenants in the name of "common area maintenance" charges. The current owners of the plaza are apparently attempting to pass on their huge redevelopment costs to the tenants. One small tenant recently received a bill for over $50,000 in CAM charges. Another just received a bill for over $60,000, payable in full immediately! These charges are in addition to the high rents they are already paying. Other tenants have received identical bills. These charges are not affordable and tenants will soon vacate Blackhawk Plaza in droves. Tenants who have not been able to pay these charges and have left and are being sued by the owners.

No "Wolfgang Puck" chef is going to fix this place. It will soon be empty, leaving the California Teacher's Association Pension fund, who's money CenterCal Properties used to acquire this dinosaur, with a huge loss. Be thankful you are not a retired teacher.
