Hops and Scotch to Open in Walnut Creek

There’s a difference between hopscotch, Hopscotch, and Hops and Scotch—and you’ll soon be able to sort it all out at the Avalon Walnut Creek apartment complex.

We all remember the hopscotch game of our childhood, and those who frequent Uptown Oakland likely know about Kyle Itani’s restaurant Hopscotch, but Hops and Scotch will be a bar featuring scotch, whiskey, craft brews, and bites right across from the Pleasant Hill BART station.

An opening date has yet to be announced, but we’ll keep you posted.

Mona’s Burgers Adds Another Concord Restaurant

Beyond the Creek reports that Mona’s Burgers and Shakes—which began with one restaurant at the Palos Verdes Plaza in Walnut Creek—will add another Concord operation. The first location opened last year in Oak Grove Plaza, but the new one on Clayton Road will be called Mona’s Bar and Grill (to avoid confusion, if nothing else).

Kung Fu Supplants Green Garden in Walnut Creek

Long-running Chinese restaurant Green Garden has been replaced by Kung Fu Chinese in Palos Verdes Mall. And with cold weather—and cold season—coming on, check out comforting offerings such as the wor wonton soup. It’s good for what ails you ...

Burger Lounge Partners with Healthy Planet at Walnut Creek Intermediate

A lot of restaurants and businesses talk the talk about sustainable sourcing and healthy eating, but Burger Lounge walks the walk as well.

This past Saturday, the chain—which has an outlet in Walnut Creek—partnered with Healthy Planet USA and Walnut Creek Intermediate to plant a garden at the middle school. More than 40 volunteers cleaned out an old garden and then hand-tilled the area in preparation for planting around 20 drought-tolerant fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The final steps will be taken later this week.

This kind of effort fits in nicely with Burger Lounge’s emphasis on ingredients and freshness while also boosting Healthy Planet USA, which aims to teach children about conscious eating and healthy choices by planting gardens at schools. In California alone, Healthy Planet has worked with more than 27,000 students across 60 schools, and the organization will have a presence at WCI for the next year to help ensure that the garden takes root (sorry).

Lucia’s Adds “Cicchetti” to Our Vocab

Berkeley’s Lucia’s Pizzeria has expanded its menu to include cicchetti (pronounced “chi-KEH-dee”), imports from Venice that are, essentially, tapas.

But it’s not surprising that the Shattuck Avenue restaurant is adding a Venetian specialty, as co-owner Alessandro Uccelli is from The City of Bridges, and cicchetti fits perfectly with the signature pizza and wine list. (But note Lucia’s does more than pizza—there are plenty of pastas and even slow-roasted porchetta.)

The cicchetti menu includes small bites such as baccalà, Venetian meatballs, and blistered peppers—plus, Happy Hour visitors can get a glass of wine for just $6.

The Terrace Room

The Terrace Room Does Día de los Muertos

From tonight through Friday, November 3, The Terrace Room in Oakland will offer dinner menu specials in honor of Día de los Muertos from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

A $40 prix fixe menu will allow diners to sample a variety of special appetizers, main dishes, and desserts—plus cocktails such as palomas, mojitos, and of course, margaritas. Also note that all the special dishes will be on the à la carte menu, so the options are pretty much endless. (The regular menu will also still be available.)

La Marcha

La Marcha Goes All in on Sherry

Of course you knew that next week is International Sherry Week, but you probably didn’t know that Berkeley’s La Marcha is hosting an array of events in honor of that traditional fortified wine from November 6 through November 12.

Diners can take advantage of the restaurant’s weeklong Sherry Pairing Dinner ($40 prix fixe) featuring bone marrow and clam croqueta, duck sausage and braised pork cheeks. And those who just want to explore the world of sherry can sample seven different sherry flights (not all on the same night, hopefully) with a 50% discount.

The celebration at University and San Pablo will be highlighted by the November 10 “Night in Jerez” party, with tapas, paella, a live flamenco show, and of course, plenty of sherry.
