Oakland's Commis gets Michelin Star, Lafayette's Chevalier Recognized for Exceptional Value

New Piedmont Ave. eatery is only new East Bay restaurant awarded star in 2010 Michelin Guide. Chevalier wins "Bib Gourmand" prize for great value.

There weren't too many surpises in the just-unveiled 2010 Michelin Guide, but one of them would have to be that Oakland's Commis restaurant received one of the French rating guide's coveted stars, joining Chez Panisse as the only East Bay eateries to receive a star. Opened in June by Manresa alum James Syhabout, this austere eatery's menu is prix fixe—$59 for three courses and $29 more for wine pairings. While we thoroughly enjoyed it (CLICK HERE to read our review), our initial impression of Commis would have to be more in line with that of the Chron's Michael Bauer, who thought "the experience hasn't gelled," and perhaps didn't yet warrant a star. Either way, it's another solid dining addition to the rapidly improving East Bay dining scene.

Also of note are several new East Bay additions to Michelin's Bib Gourmand, which features restaurants serving a meal (two dishes and a glass of wine or dessert) for $40 or less. The new mentions in Oakland all opened recently: Brown Sugar Kitchen in West Oakland, Camino on Grand Ave., and Picán in Uptown. The two new Berkeley additions are Corso on Shattuck in the Gourmet Ghetto and the brand new FIVE restaurant in the renovated Hotel Shattuck Plaza. And finally, Lafayette's new French bistro Chevalier also received a nod from the Michelin judges. In addition, two restaurants that received Bib Gourmand mentions have opened new East Bay locations: Vanessa's Bistro in Walnut Creek and Burma Superstar in Oakland. Check out the complete list below.
