First Bite: True Food Kitchen in Walnut Creek

An intriguing menu specializes in vitality.

Any lingering cabbage-baggage that “healthy food” carried into our enlightened farm-to-table age and region has been dispelled with the opening of True Food Kitchen in Walnut Creek, the second Northern California location (the other is in Palo Alto) for the chain founded by anti-inflammatory nutrition guru Andrew Weil.

Our anonymous visit to this airy, green-and-yellow-accented eatery proved once and for all that delicious and nutritious can be synonymous. Fish tacos featuring shredded cabbage, pickled red onions, and the freshest sea bass you could hope for were sublime. Meanwhile, a seemingly odd combination of charred cauliflower with dates, harissa, and tahini was actually one of 2016’s tastiest and most intriguing starters. Our favorite from the extensive global menu, however, was a bold dish of red-chili noodles tossed with crisp green veggies and wild prawns.

Don't miss the impressive beverage list, which includes organic wine, craft beer, turmeric-laced juices, exotic teas, and refreshing cocktails.

The bottom line: No matter how much you eat here, you'll likely feel lighter when you leave than when you arrived.
