On the Road with Nancy Brown: Brownstones in NY, Oregon Dude Ranch and LAN Airlines lands in SFO.

Travel Writer Nancy D. Brown shares New York lodging tips.

Photo courtesey of the Washington Square Hotel

My recent trip to the big apple was like bed shopping with Goldilocks and the three bears. My room at the Larchmont Hotel near NYU was affordable, clean and safe, at under $200, with a shared bathroom down the hall.

The Washington Square Hotel was a boutique hotel with a higher price tag of $275, and came with a wonderful breakfast in a great Greenwich Village location.

However, the Hilton New York in mid town Manhattan was just right. The deluxe king room, priced from $299-$429, gave this Goldilocks a comfortable bed, and access to the Executive Lounge. Let’s just say that Goldilocks and the three bears would have enjoyed the hot porridge served at breakfast with a view of Central Park.

Long Hollow Ranch, Sisters, Oregon

“We knew cattle ranching,” replied Shirley Bloomfelt of Long Hollow Ranch. “It was the bed and breakfast part that was new to us.” The husband and wife team went to Dude Ranch School to learn about all things cowboy.

The 600 acre working cattle ranch offers two trail rides per day. Guest may bring their own horse, or ride one of the ranches 12 horses. Wrangler Katie has enough trails on the property to ride for miles without repeating routes. Bring your camera, as the view point trail offers a scenic overlook to the stunning Three Sisters cascade mountain range.

A week’s stay at the all-inclusive Long Hollow Ranch includes a breakfast ride and dinner cookout, as well as a rafting trip along Oregon’s Deschutes River.

Beat the Heat in Berkeley

Closer to home, Berkeley’s Claremont Hotel & Spa is offering Diablo readers “Beat the Heat” and “Family Fun in the Sun” packages until September 6, 2010. The Family Fun package offers $100 Spa or Club credit toward swim or tennis lessons or Kid’s Camp.

Personally, I’m waiting for a Cal parent’s weekend package. Go Bears.

LAN Lands at SFO Airport

Is plane hopping to South America slowing you down? LAN Airlines recently introduced nonstop service from San Francisco International Airport to Lima, Peru.

LAN offers four weekly frequencies between San Francisco and Lima, with connections from Sao Paulo, Santiago and Buenos Aires. The new route gives Bay Area residents the opportunity to discover unique destinations like Cuzco in Peru, the Patagonia in Chile and Argentina, as well as Easter Island and Iguazú Falls.
