What’s In Store: December 4
Don’t miss these upcoming holiday shopping parties; Tribez Salon offers a special primping package for upcoming soirees; new stores arrive on Berkeley’s Fourth Street and in the Sunvalley Mall; and more in our retail report.
It’s hard to believe, but it is already December. Christmas trees are filling up parking lots, Hanukkah is days away, and the rain makes us want to snuggle up at home. Whether you’re most excited about holiday parties, wrapping presents, or seeing loved ones, we’ve got you covered with upcoming events, gift ideas, and retail news.
On December 5, get dolled up and head to Holiday Girls Night Out—an event at Neiman Marcus hosted by personal stylist and shopper Carolyn Rovner of C2 Style. From 6-9 p.m., you’ll enjoy champagne, appetizers, and Rovner’s stylish tips. There’s also a sale on new arrivals to the store. From handbags to menswear, you can save up to 50-percent off select items until December 6, so don’t waste any time.
Also on December 6, Oakland’s Hawthorn is throwing another can’t-miss party. During its Winter Revelry event from 5–8 p.m., Hawthorn will offer storewide discounts, along with dip-dyed Ali Golden pieces from her Fall/Winter collection, sweet treats from James and the Giant Cupcake, and whiskey apple hot toddies from Emeryville’s Prizefighter. Cupcakes and warm drinks while boutique shopping? Don’t mind if we do.
For the earthier gift givers, the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden invites you to the Garden Holiday Soiree on December 7. Starting at 2 p.m., you can shop around the garden store for discounts on gorgeous plants and eco-friendly, handmade items from Back to the Roots and the Blue Chair Fruit Company. Live music and nibbles from Sweet Adeline Bakery add to the festivities. Nearby, Viv & Ingrid is kicking off its holiday sample sale at Oxford Hall. Over the next two weekends, you can snap up some Christmas party–worthy jewels for half the price. As a bonus, on December 15, savor gourmet chocolates from Oakland-based Maison Bouche as you try on earrings, necklaces, and the new clear crystal ring.
Too many great parties, not enough time on December 8. Over in Lafayette, find handmade soaps, knitted scarves, journals, and other unique items at the Holiday Trunk Show at Lafayette Gallery, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bring the little ones to meet Santa at Convert Shoes on Fourth Street from 2–4 p.m., and receive a super adorable Polaroid photo of your kids and jolly St. Nick courtesy of Photobooth SF. As the kids whisper secrets to Santa, the grown-ups can sip cocktails and try on super cozy EMU slippers. We wish the Little Creatures Shark boots came in our size.
Gary Patrick Salon is celebrating the opening of its new wing with a swanky cocktail party that begins at 7 p.m. on December 8. Chat with stylists as you admire the sleek new addition to the upscale Pleasanton salon. Want to look especially beautiful for your neighbor’s holiday party? Visit Tribez Salon in Blackhawk for a Blow Dry Bar primp session on Thursday and Friday evenings through December 28. Complimentary bubbly tickles your taste buds as stylists apply Georgie eco-luxe lashes (fun fact: you can reuse those bat-worthy beauties up to six times), touch up your brows, and give you a blowout of any style for $75.
If you head over to San Francisco for some iconic Union Square holiday shopping, you may want to ask Siri for directions to Jonathan Adler’s store at 2133 Fillmore Street. On December 6, the design guru will be on hand to sign his new book 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life. Along with yummy treats, the invitation promises fist bumps. We’ll toast to that.
Another great place to find one-of-a-kind gifts is the Renegade Craft Fair at the Concourse Exhibition Center, December 15–16. It’s a Pinterest lover’s paradise with some 100 vendors selling everything from gorgeous leather bags to sweatshirts for dogs. We’re looking forward to picking up a custom-made street-sign pillow by Oakland designer CasaMurriguez.
The Scoop on Shops
Our informative friend Beyond the Creek reports that the Right Start baby store across from the Container Store in Walnut Creek plans to close; there’s some talk that Paper Source may be the new tenant. According to Patch, Art & Science of Eyewear closed its location on North Main Street; G by Guess and an LA-based clothing store called FHL Styles opened in Sun Valley Mall; and the seasonal pop-up store Main Street Designs is up and running next to Nordstrom in the Stoneridge Mall. If you can make the trek to Mill Valley on December 5 (tomorrow night!), you’re in for a sweet treat at the store opening party for Marie Veronique Organics at 29 Miller Avenue. Arrive around 6 p.m. for a free personal skin consultation from Marie Veronique herself, and learn more about the natural skin care line including an anti-aging treatment called Pacific. Developed by top Beverly Hills dermatologists, the line’s serums, cleansers, and creams are made with ingredients from the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Rim.
Back over on Fourth Street in Berkeley: Nest and Emerald Gowns boutiques opened around Thanksgiving. All shops have extended their hours until 7 p.m. until December 23, and there’s free parking every weekend near Virginia and Fourth streets.
