Boutique Peek: J. Colleen

Find a little bit of everything in this chic Lafayette boutique.

J. Colleen, a new Lafayette boutique that sells upscale women’s clothing, art, gifts, and jewelry, is as much of an experience as it is a shopping destination.

Once you walk past the Vespa (available for purchase), funky Oakland-esque art that is painted locally (also available for purchase), and the chandeliers from Jessica McClintock’s bedroom (totally not for sale), you are surrounded by cases of jewelry.

Feeling like some island flavor? Try on something from Aim Hi, a Tahitian company that makes one-of-a-kind turquoise and black pearl jewelry. If mainland accessories are more your style, browse edgy silver pieces from celebrity jewelry designer Michelle Mirkovich of Divinity Jewelry LA, who is also a friend of owner Julie Rubio.

“This is a place that’s a little different than what Lamorinda is used to,” Rubio says. “I thought, ‘Why not mix all of these places together?’”

Next, venture farther to the back room, where the divine clothes are kept. There, surrounded by yummy dark wood, intriguing lighting, and a beta fish I named "Chanel," you’ll find items from Stella McCartney, Free People, and Calvin Klein. Lovers of local threads can try on pieces from Concord’s Tart. For a more boho-chic look, browse the high-end vintage consignment section (including items from Jessica McClintock’s closet that are for sale), or try on a colorful maxi from Indah.

Simply put, this boutique needs to be checked out in person to get the full effect. Even if you aren’t in the mood to shop, chances are that the beautiful Rubio will let you soak up some sun in her super-cute side garden. Rubio says the community has been open and welcoming, and she plans to return the favor.

“I want to start having outdoor events and parties here once per month,” she says. “I want this space to be inviting.”
