Like many other East Bay towns and cities (as well as places across the nation), Lafayette is urging its residents to “Try Lafayette First” [link: http://lafayettechamber.org/] and shop at its local merchants. In an effort to offset declining sales taxes and property tax revenues in the city, Lafayette’s Chamber of Commerce has prompted the movement, having recently organized a rally that took place on Monday. The rally was held at Plaza Park around 3pm and featured “pledge” forms – forms that asked residents to promise to shop locally during the holiday season. The pledge forms were then entered into a contest for a lucky winner to receive $1,000 worth of gift certificates to Lafayette...

“We didn’t pursue the Obamas,” says Biscotti spokeswoman Judy Beall. The Wall Street Journal’s website reports that the Obamas purchased the dress at Nordstrom in Chicago.
Biscotti co-owner Bernadette Reiss was delightfully surprised to recognize her dress when she saw Malia walk out on stage. Reiss almost didn’t recognize it...
