Fall is in the Air

I'm off tomorrow, winging eastward, to meet join a group of Bay Area people for a biking trip around Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts.   We'll be cared for and guided by Backroads, the superb travel and active adventure company headquartered in the East Bay. Those coming on the trip purchased the journey at a fundraiser for the Taylor Family Foundation at its annual "Day in Park" extravaganza.  The money is used to support the Foundation's important and extraordinary work to give children in need the chance to enjoy themselves for a little while at the magical Camp Arroyo near Livermore.

We'll be pedaling around New England just as the fall colors start to bloom there. It's my favorite time of year in the northeast. I lived near Boston for a few years, and each fall I spent almost every weekend following the vivid colors as they moved south from the forests of Canada to the mountains of Virginia.  It's a stunning sight we don't quite have out west.

Having said that, we can see lovely splashes of reds and golds in our region, too. Head into the high country of the Sierra and see the leaves of aspen and other deciduous trees turn color in the slanting light of late summer and early fall. The dramatic eastern side of the Sierra is graced by golden leaves near rivers and lakes this time of year. Snow may be coming soon, and the leaves have a brief time to show their stuff.

Of course, we also have other flashes of color coming closer to home. The seasons are changing. We can see it and enjoy it in the days and months ahead, whether we travel or not.
