Diablo was saddened to hear of the passing of Art Bonwell, who cofounded Save Mount Diablo with Mary Bowerman on December 7, 1971. Bonwell passed away on July 14 at age 85, ending a fulfilling life that included extensive contributions to the mountain that he worked tirelessly to preserve.
“Helping to create Save Mount Diablo and arousing public and legislative support for the mountain has been the most important work in my life—I feel that I have contributed to the world,” said Bonwell to Diablo in 2000.
Bonwell served on the Save Mount Diablo Board of Directors until his passing and aided the organization’s growth of more than 8,000 supporters today. He received many awards, including Save Mount Diablo’s first Mountain Star Award in 1999, and Diablo’s Threads of Hope Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2000. A year later, the Crest of Highland Ridge, in Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, was renamed “Founders Ridge” by East Bay Regional Park District to honor Bonwell.
In remembrance of Bonwell, a “Celebration of Life” event will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, at Mitchell Canyon, Mt. Diablo State Park, Clayton. Visit Save Mount Diablo's website for more details.
