Director David Lean's Oscar-winning classic screens August 13 at the Orinda Theatre

This month's classic film series offering is a no-doubt-about-it four star masterpiece: The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Director David Lean won his first Best Director Oscar for his work on this intense World War II thriller, which also took home the Best Picture award for 1957. In fact, the film won seven Oscars overall, including adapted screenplay, music, editing, cinematography, and Best Actor for Alec Guinness' unforgettable turn as a British colonel in a Japanese prisoner of war camp.

We picked Bridge on the River Kwai for the August screening because we love showing David Lean movies that month—last year was Lawrence of Arabia, before that was Doctor Zhivago—and we have had such great turnouts, we're just going to keep showing his movies every August until we run out.

The fun starts at 7 p.m. on August 13—admission is FREE (make sure to arrive early enough to find appropriate parking, seating is first-come-first serve.) As always, we give away gourmet cupcakes before the film starts, as prizes for trivia questions, provided by our friends at Republic of Cake.

See you at the movies!
