Best picture-winner stars Marlon Brando, screens August 11 at the Orinda Theatre

"I coulda been a contender!"

You've heard the quote a million times, but how long has it been since you've seen the movie?

The quote, of course, comes from Marlon Brando's character in On the Waterfront, the 1954 Oscar winner for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and five other awards. The movie dazzles audiences in its original release, when Brando's performance was widely applauded as a game changer in film acting. More than 60 years after the film's release, On the Waterfront maintains its stunning power—which is why it is our August selection for the Classic Film Series. (Diablo sponsors this popular series—we screen a classic movie for free on the second Thursday evening of each month.)

On the Waterfront will screen on August 11 at 7 p.m., in the Orinda Theatre's large auditorium. As always, the event is first-come, first serve, so please arrive early to find parking and best available seating. As always, the series is sponsored by presenting partner Cine Cuvée (Orinda Theatre Square's outstanding new wine bar), and Republic of Cake will provide cupcakes as prizes for our trivia contest just before the movie starts.

If you can't make our screening of On the Waterfront, I've just learned that the San Francisco Symphony will be showing the film on January 7 and 8 as part of its wildly popular series in which the symphony performs the film's score live during the screening. See you at the movies!
