Q&A with Lisa Landry, headlining at Tommy T's through Thursday
Tonight through Thursday, comedian Lisa Landry is headlining Tommy T’s Comedy Club in Pleasanton. Lisa gave me a call at Diablo just after driving up I-5 from her home in Los Angeles, and we had a chat about her stand-up career and her gig as one of Us Weekly’s “Fashion Police.”
Diablo: Hi Lisa, thanks for calling. Is this your first trip to the East Bay?
Lisa Landry: It is, I’ve never been here before. It’s beautiful—and bright. I’m convinced that California forces you to be healthier because the bright sunlight is brutal when you’re hung over. It’s easier to be hung over in other parts of the country.
Diablo: Where are you from?
Lisa Landry: I’m originally Harvey, Louisiana. Harvey, like the movie about the imaginary bunny rabbit. Good decent people in Harvey, but nothing to do, On Friday you can go to Dairy Queen or make a baby. That’s it. I’ve been living in New York for the past 13 years though.
Diablo: How long have you been doing stand-up?
Lisa Landry: 11 years. Since I was 12-years-old. (Laughs)
Diablo: You’re also one of the sassy “Fashion Police” for Us Weekly, where you comment about paparazzi pictures of celebrities and their outfits How did you get that gig?
Lisa Landry: They were looking for some people who were really into fashion, and some comedians. I’m one of the comedians. I dress like crap—I’m a jeans and t-shirt girl.
It’s kind of fun to bust on women who spend tens of thousands of dollars on their outfits. But, I don’t like to be too mean-spirited, because I’m getting tired of the meanness of our culture. There’s too many people who hide behind their keyboards.
Diablo: Give us an example of a fashion comment you’ve made that’s not mean-spirited.
Lisa Landry: There was a picture of an actor named Dax Sheppard, who’s this really hot guy. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, and he has this ripped physique, and he was wearing this goofy crocheted hat. So I said, “As if I’m looking at his hat.”
Diablo: What are your fashion tips for the women who might be coming to your sow this week?
Lisa Landry: My go-to style tips are: always wear clean underwear, and expensive shoes and nice purse help you get away with a lot more. Bt the big one is this: Don’t spend so much energy trying to impress guys with what you wear. Women are always trying to impress guys with what they are wearing, when guys just want to get your clothes off anyway.
Diablo: Your website features you doing a cooking show.
Lisa Landry: Yes, it’s a spoof of the Rachel Ray Show. I make a meal by just grabbing whatever is the cupboard of my crappy apartment. I made a peanut butter and Dirito sandwich. I call it slacker cuisine.
Diablo: Delicious. What would you pair that with?
Lisa Landry: Maybe a Smokey and the Bandit movie marathon on TBS.
Lisa Landry performs at Tommy T’s Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Tommy T's Comedy and Steakhouse,
