Free Movie: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Jimmy Stewart stars in Frank Capra's highly relevant political comedy, screening for free Nov. 10 at the historic Orinda Theatre
I can't take credit for selecting the November 10 film in our monthly Classic Film Series, but I could not have picked a more perfect picture. Two days after the Presidential Election—certainly the nastiest one in my lifetime—we'll be showing the 1939 comedy, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
James Stewart stars as Jefferson Smith in one of the beloved actor's most iconic performances. Director Frank Capra's movie is both a valentine to democracy and a thorough scouring of political corruption and Beltway behavior. The movie received 11 Oscar nominations—for Best Picture, Stewart for Best Actor, Claude Rains and Harry Carey for Best Supporting Actor, and Capra for Best Director. The film won a much-deserved Oscar for writing for best Original Story and probably would have taken home several more had it not been up against Gone With the Wind.
We will be showing Mr. Smith Goes to Washington on November 10 at 7 p.m. at the historic Orinda Theatre. The screening i arrive, but please arrive early to secure parking and seating (first come, first serve). Our friends at Republic of Cake will provide cupcakes as prizes for our trivia contest before the film.
See you at the movies!
