We Love the Nightlife: December 13–20

A local whiskey takes top honors at an international competition; ugly sweaters and Santa-themed beer crawls; a Mad Men–inspired cocktail party; and more nightlife happenings.

I’m back this week with your boozy news, after my intern extraordinaire, Ana, handled nightlife duties for me last week. You’re the best, Ana! This weekend, you have plenty of opportunity to bust out your ugliest sweaters and holiday-related wear for some seasonal revelry, so get ready for some serious “ho ho ho”-ing and a few drunken Santas to come stumbling your way.

Concannon’s whiskey named one of the world’s best

Before we launch into events, congratulations are in order for Concannon. While best known for its wines, Concannon also produces an Irish whiskey, which was named the best new Irish whiskey of the year at the New York International Spirits Competition. Looks like I need to sneak over to Ethan’s desk and steal a swig…purely for research, of course.

Ugly sweater party at Barrel Aged

I’ve had zero luck finding an ugly sweater at local thrift shops and questionable discount retailers, but if you’ve managed to score one, you need to break it out for the ugly sweater party at Barrel Aged this Friday. Head over to the Martinez restaurant and cocktail lounge in a sweater with a toy to donate, and you’ll receive 10-percent off your bill. You can also compete for the dubious honor of having the ugliest of the ugly sweaters, dance to live music, throw down during table games, and guzzle spiced rum, rye whiskey egg nog, and other cocktail specials. Friday, December 14, 823 Main St., Martinez, event website.

Santa beer crawl in Martinez

Apparently, Martinez is the place to be this weekend. The city is playing host to a Santa Beer Crawl on Saturday, when local businesses will allow drunken Santas to stumble through their stores sampling beer from more than 20 local craft breweries. The 21+ event also includes a competition for best Christmas costume and best holiday sweater, so make sure you don’t spill any eggnog at Barrel Aged the night before. If you don’t live in the area, event organizers are running a free shuttle from North Concord BART, from 3–9 p.m. $25, Saturday, December 15, 4–7 p.m., Main Street Martinez, event website.

Kerstbier Fest at the Trappist

What originally just started as an extremely alarming picture of a demonic creature is apparently a sampling of Christmas beers at the Trappist. This Friday and Saturday, pay $25 and you’ll score a festival glass and tasting of four six-ounce samples of your choice of more than 25 holiday brews. The draft list includes favorites from Mikkeller, St. Bernardus Christmas, De Struise Tjesus Reserva, and other coveted pours. Friday, December 14–Saturday, December 15, 460 Eight St., Oakland, event website.

The Rolling Stones roll into Pittsburg

All holiday-ed out? How about a little British invasion to spice things up? On Saturday, the Unauthorized Rolling Stones will take over the stage at E.J. Phair’s Old Town Pittsburg taproom. The band, which has been commended for having the most visually accurate Mick, will perform covers of the Stones’ classic hits. $10, Saturday, December 15, 9 p.m., 300 Cumberland St., Pittsburg, event website.

Mad Men–themed cocktail party at Spoontonic Lounge

Oh you classy, huh? Then dress up in cocktail attire and swing over to Walnut Creek’s Spoontonic Lounge for its 11th annual holiday party. The “thank you” to customers includes hors d’oeuvres and desserts catered by Mike Vizcarra and Carrie Iriki (of Tasty Zombies fame) and a rotating DJ set. Make sure you come dressed to impress in cocktail dresses and suits, since dress code will be enforced before 11 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 8 p.m.–2 a.m., 2580 N. Main St., Walnut Creek, event website.
