We Love the Nightlife: September 19–26
A Berkeley institution shuts down; Dublin gets a new salsa night; a roundup of East Bay Oktoberfest events; and more nightlife happenings.

I’m sad to report that Berkeley’s Shattuck Down Low, which hosts one of my favorite local karaoke nights, lost its lease and will close next month. According to Berkeleyside, the building owner was afraid the music would interfere with a new pizza and bar venture moving in upstairs. At least that explains why the Down Low’s general manager has been pulling shifts at Club Mallard.
Dublin Sports Pub & Grill, while perhaps not what one first thinks of in terms of Latin flavor, recently introduced salsa nights. The bar is bumping karaoke to Thursdays and hosting weekly dancing lessons on Wednesdays. Beginners welcome: instruction ranges from beginner to advanced.
Quick! There’s still time to make it to the SF Cocktail Week party at Oakland’s New Parish tonight. If you can’t make it, check out the other East Bay event, a Sunday’s cops and robbers–themed bash at St. George, in my write-up.
Oktoberfest is here! Although the actual month of October is still more than a week out, Oktoberfest kicks off in Germany (and the East Bay) this weekend. In Pleasanton, Handles Gastropub is celebrating on Saturday with unlimited tastings from more than 20 local breweries. Tickets ($35 in advance, $40 at the gate) support Special Olympics Northern California. Saturday, September 22, 1–5 p.m., 855 Main St., Pleasanton, website.
Outpost Sports Bar and Grill in San Ramon is hosting Rocktoberfest, a celebration with international and local beers brewed for the occasion. You’ll have the opportunity to swig Sam Adams Oktoberfest, Gordon Biersch Festbier, and Widmer Oktoberfest Ale alongside German food such as bratwurst, spatzle, and potato pancakes. Saturday, September 22, 12 p.m.–2 a.m., 2251 San Ramon Valley Blvd., San Ramon, (925) 837-7748, outpostsportsbar.com.
Has your Oktoberfest celebration been lacking mustaches? Both East Bay Pyramid location will be hosting ‘Staches and Steins Oktoberfest celebrations. This Saturday at the Berkeley location or on September 29 in Walnut Creek, style your best mustache, strap on a pair of leiderhosen, and kick back for live music, German food, and a bratwurst eating competition. During the Walnut Creek event, $20 will get you a 1.5-liter souvenir stein with three fills. Saturday, September 22, 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m., 901 Gilman St., Berkeley, website; Saturday, September 29, 1–6 p.m., 1410 Locust St., Walnut Creek, website.
Rounding out the celebration is Pete’s Brassrail and Car Wash in Danville. During its Oktoberfest party next Saturday, you can throw back all-you-can-drink beers from a commemorative boot glass (you get to keep!) and help yourself to all-you-can-eat food. $40 ($35 for club members), Saturday, September 29, 7–10 p.m., 201 Hartz Ave., Danville, petesbrassrail.com.
