We Love the Nightlife: September 7–September 13
A beer festival hits Jack London Square and Sierra Nevada takes over Livermore; Hawker Fare and Commonwealth Cafe collaborate on a beer dinner; a guide to local sports bars for catching football; and more nightlife happenings.
Football is back! I, for one, know how I’ll be spending my Sunday, but here other fun weekend activities for the rest of the days (or if you’re not keen on the pigskin).
Jack London’s Beer Invasion
Starting tonight, the Northern California Beer Festival will kick off with a beer dinner in Jack London Square to benefit two Oakland charities: Great Oakland Public Schools and Kitchen of Champions. The evening begins with appetizers and brews from local heavyweights such as Linden Street Brewing and Pyramid, before progressing to a four-course meal paired with special limited release beers. Participating restaurants include Chop Bar, A Coté, and Pican. The event continues on Saturday with “Under the Beerwalk,” a Yelp-sponsored party that features carnival games, street performers, and more beer. Guest list is currently full for Saturday, so time to start begging your Yelp friends for an invite. $95, Friday, September 7, 6–10 p.m.; $10 donation, Saturday, September 8, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., 98 Broadway, Oakland, website.
Sierra Nevada Occupies Tap 25
Hot on the heels of its tap takeover at Martinez’s Creek Monkey Tap House, Sierra Nevada is invading Livermore’s Tap 25 this Saturday. All 25 taps at the pub will be exclusively pouring Sierra Nevada brews, including limited editions from its summer brew camps. And although sign-ups for the corn hole tournament are full, you can still watch people compete at 2 p.m. while listening to all day live music from Of Shape & Sound. Saturday, September 8, 12–10 p.m., 25 S. Livermore Ave., Livermore, taptwentyfive.com.
Commonwealth Cafe Lives On
Following a fire in July, Oakland’s Commonwealth Café is attempting to return to some form of business as usual with an evening of beer dinners at Hawker Fare. Adam Lamoreaux, Kel Alcala, and Sayre Piotrikowski (aka Beer and Soul) will be tackling the beer, and Commonwealth will be joining forces with Hawker Fare chef Justin Yu for a six course affair that pairs well with the brews. $55, Sunday, September 9, 6–10 p.m. (seatings at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30), 2300 Webster St., Oakland, event website.
Tonight is First Friday Art Murmur in Oakland (check out my previous roundup here), and have I mentioned it’s time for football? For Wednesdays opener, I did a roundup on local sports bars. Check them out for ideas on where you can catch the games on Sunday and the specials you can expect. If college ball is more your thing, we also have a roundup of places where you can score specials during the Cal games.
