Los Angeles residents have been raving for years about Umami’s creative approach to the classic burger. Now, we have one, smack-dab in Oakland’s hopping Uptown entertainment district.
Where is it? 2100 Franklin St., Ste. 2190, Oakland, (510) 899-8626, umami.com.
When is it open? Lunch and dinner daily.
Why try it? Umami blurs the line between fast food and fine dining. From the wall-length Asian-inspired mural, to the full bar, to those intricately crafted burgers, it’s hip.
What to order? The original—with roasted tomato, shiitake mushroom, caramelized onion, and a parmesan crisp—has that savory “umami” quality. But we prefer the sharper punch of the manly burger, stuffed with beer-cheddar cheese, bacon lardons, and smoked salt onion strings. Make sure to ask for the cheesy tots off the secret menu.
How much? Burgers run $10 to $12, but you can taste the quality.
Who goes? Lunch is for downtown office workers, while dinner draws a younger crowd exploring the Uptown nightlife.
