The List: December
Warm up this winter, with festive holiday shows, a fun run, and a craft beer crawl.
Grand Menorah Lighting
(12/1) Contra Costa’s largest menorah, at Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza, is lit nightly during Hanukkah, but on this special celebration evening, enjoy dreidels, doughnuts, and a performance by Jeremy the
Fire Juggler. jewishcontracosta.com.
Bah Humbug 5K
(12/7) Before all the egg nog, gingerbread men, and peppermint lattes, tie on some running shoes, and hit the pavement at this 5K fun run through San Ramon’s Bishop Ranch. In addition to race time, awards will be given for best costumes. sanramon.ca.gov.
A Christmas Carol
(12/12–12/22) An East Bay holiday tradition, Center Rep’s annual production of the Charles Dickens classic returns to Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center. The show features larger-than-life sets, an ensemble cast, and special effects magic. centerrep.org.
Food and Drink
Santa Beer Crawl
(12/14) Don a Santa suit, or your ugliest Christmas sweater, and head to downtown Martinez to sample more than 20 craft brews, including Ale Industries, Calicraft, and E.J. Phair. Shuttle available from North Concord BART. santabeercrawl.com.
Handel’s Messiah // Randi Beach
(12/14) Party like it’s 1741, when Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra performs George Frideric Handel’s grand, Bible-inspired oratorio at Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall. Hallelujah! calperformances.org.
Beauty and the Beast
(12/21–1/5) For something a little different than the typical holiday offerings, head to San Francisco’s Curran Theatre for a magical performance of another sort: the national tour of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. shnsf.com.
Ice and Snow
Where to Find Winter
Why settle for the East Bay’s mild weather when you can enjoy a winter wonderland—at least for a day. For snow, visit Livermore’s Home for the Holidays (on 12/7), which includes snow in Lizzie Fountain and horse-drawn carriage rides, or Martinez’s Holiday Frolic (on 12/6), with a snow park and live reindeer. Or glide across the ice on an outdoor rink. Walnut Creek on Ice at Civic Park (11/15–1/12) and the Little Ice Rink at Alameda’s South Shore Center (11/8–1/20) both offer lessons and a snack area with steaming hot cocoa.
