Star Wars The Force Awakens
A Movie Not So Far Away
Even though The Force Awakens, out December 18, takes place in a galaxy far, far away, there are plenty of Star Wars connections to the East Bay.
Actor Mark Hamill, who reprises his Luke Skywalker character, wasn’t born in a galaxy far, far away; he came into the world in Oakland, in the year 1951.
Also back is Carrie Fisher, as Luke’s sister, Leia. Fisher had a hit at Berkeley Rep with her one-woman show, Wishful Drinking.
The Force Awakens’ actor John Boyega is filming The Circle, based on the book by former Berkeley resident Dave Eggers and costarring former Oakland resident Tom Hanks.
Star Wars creator George Lucas will receive a Kennedy Center Honor on December 6. One of Lucas’ costars that night will be Berkeley resident Rita Moreno.
When Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, the only place to see it in Contra Costa County was at the dome-shaped cinema in Pleasant Hill. Just like the Death Star, the Dome was eventually smashed to smithereens.
