Diablo Magazine Editor To Be Featured On CBS News '48 Hours Mystery'
This episode of 48 Hours Mystery will feature Crooks retelling his part in the story "The Setup," including his role in the early 2011 investigation and subsequent arrest of private investigator Chris Butler and Special Agent Supervisor Norman Wielsch, a 12-year veteran of the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement.
Walnut Creek, CA (PRWEB) February 17, 2012 -- Peter Crooks, senior editor/senior writer of Diablo magazine, will be featured on CBS News 48 Hours Mystery on Saturday, February 18, at 10 p.m. PST on CBS (CBS-5 in the Bay Area). 48 Hours Mystery reached out to Crooks in late September, 2011, wanting to interview Crooks about his role in the early 2011 investigation and subsequent arrest of private investigator Chris Butler and Special Agent Supervisor Norman Wielsch, a 12-year veteran of the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement.
This episode of 48 Hours Mystery will feature Crooks retelling his part in the story, including being taken along for a fake ride along by Butler and two of his “P.I. Moms” with the intent of publishing a lighthearted pop culture piece about a new reality TV show. The story took many wild twists, starting with an anonymous emailer tipping off Crooks that the ride along investigation was completely staged as a publicity stunt—and that there were more sinister goings-on in Butler’s world. Crooks eventually helped this confidential informant safely contact law enforcement and in turn exposed a range of criminal activity and police corruption.
Barney Fonzi, Group Publisher of Diablo magazine, states, “We’re very pleased that Pete and Diablo magazine are being recognized by CBS News 48 Hours Mystery. Over the last 18 months, Pete has shown an incredible amount of dedication, tenacity, and true journalistic integrity in reporting an incredible story for Diablo magazine’s readers, and at the same time providing a valuable service to our community.”
In addition to retelling his role in the investigation, Crooks consulted with 48 Hours and shared with producers files from his investigation in this stranger-than-fiction scandal. 48 Hours’ in-depth approach has earned the program and its teams numerous awards, including three Peabodys, 17 Emmys, and five RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Awards. For more about 48 Hours Mystery, go to cbsnews.com/48hours.
Crooks will also be a guest on the Dr. Phil Show, Friday, February 17, on KRON 4 at 4 p.m. PST. The program will revisit the cases staged by Butler in 2010 on the Dr. Phil Show.
