Who Needs a Drink?
You have to hand it to Berkeley Repertory Theatre for avoiding spoonful-of-sugar productions. The People’s Temple, from writer/director Leigh Fondakowski (The Laramie Project), premieres April 15. It is a harrowing account of the Jim Jones cult of the late 1970s. While you may not want to drink Kool-Aid ever again after seeing The People’s Temple, here are some nearby spots to grab a drink after any performance.
Beer: Triple Rock Brewery, 1920 Shattuck Ave., (510) 843-2739. The Red Rock Ale has won Best in Show at the California State Fair.
Cider: Jupiter, 2181 Shattuck Ave., (510) 843-8277. Nice ciders—apple, pear, and raspberry—as well as many beers, are on tap in this cozy pub.
Irish Coffee: Beckett’s Irish Pub, 2271 Shattuck Ave., (510) 647-1790. Choose from 10 Irish whiskeys.
Martinis: Downtown, 2102 Shattuck Ave., (510) 649-3810. This elegant bar and restaurant has live jazz almost every night. There’s a nice selection of wines, too.
Milkshakes: Mel’s Diner, 2240 Shattuck Ave., (510) 540-6351. A childhood fave made with Breyer’s ice cream. Yum!
The People’s Temple runs April 15 to May 29, 2025 Addison St., Berkeley, (510) 647-2949, www.berkeleyrep.org.
