The Giambino Returns

in 2002, when Jason Giambi stepped into the Oakland Coliseum batter’s box as a New York Yankee, A’s fans booed mercilessly. They were heartbroken that the star, who rose to fame in Oakland, had signed a $120 million contract with the Bronx Bombers. The boos kept on whenever Giambi came to Oakland.
But this off-season, Giambi signed with the A’s again, and all was forgiven. “Normally, with a signing of a veteran player, you get some negative reaction from fans,” says Robert Buan, host of the radio show Extra Innings. “In Jason’s case, I’ve heard no negative response. Most A’s fans feel that he is going to help the team.”
Since Giambi is sitting on 396 career home runs, it would be fitting if he hit his 400th in the new Yankee Stadium, where the A’s will play April 20–22.
