On the 2008 Diablo Food Awards

Where are Chez Panisse, Bay Wolf, Cesar, Wood Tavern, A Cote? As a frequent Bay Area diner, it puzzles me how these could be missing from any Best of the East Bay Restaurants List. To include a corporate formulaic chain like Yankee Pier is an insult to restaurants that take pride in their unique offerings and personalities. Perhaps you and your readers should venture to Berkeley more often...

Diablo Responds: Diablo food award winners are selected through an exhaustive process designed to uncover the best restaurants from among our readers’ favorites. In July, we asked readers to vote online for their preferred eateries and, after tallying the ballots, we compiled a list of the top vote getters. We then sent out our expert judges to eat multiple meals at each of those 17 restaurants in order to decide the eight award winners.

Hi! Wow, you did it again! Some of our favorite restaurants were listed in Best Restaurants. We were happy to see them on the list with the others published. Terrific!

Cheers,
Louchis Family, Moraga

On Mean and Green

As an East Bay chef and ecologist, I appreciated James O'Brien's "Mean and Green" Rant in your November issue.  I agree with his premise that the radical fringe of the Sustainable Food movement can do more harm than good when it succeeds in "turning the repetitive acts of everyday life into one long string of guilt trips."  As a society we need to realize that there are many paths toward green, and allow people to embrace the actions that speak to them. Only by becoming more inclusive, not more divisive, can we hope to take what is still a rare phenomenon (only 3% of U.S. produce is organic, only 1% is bought at farmers markets) and create something with lasting roots.

On Diablo

Sunday's I sit down and read Diablo cover to cover - it is the best single source of information on events, dining, and places to go - right in our own backyard.
